7 Days in Austria: The Perfect First-Timer Itinerary
Seven days is enough for Austria's classic route done right: 3 nights in Vienna (Schönbrunn, the Hofburg, a coffeehouse afternoon), 2 nights in Salzburg (the Altstadt, Hohensalzburg Fortress, a Sound of Music tour), and 2 nights based near Hallstatt or as a day trip from Salzburg. Connect everything by train — under 3 hours between any two stops — with zero backtracking.
This is the itinerary almost every first-time Austria trip converges on eventually, for a simple reason: it doesn't waste a single travel day. Vienna, Salzburg, and Hallstatt sit on one straight line west from the capital, connected by fast trains, so you spend your week seeing things instead of getting to them.
The route in one line
Vienna (3 nights) → Salzburg (2 nights) → Hallstatt or a Salzburg-based day trip (2 nights) → fly out of Vienna or Salzburg. No backtracking, no wasted transfers — just west, one stop at a time.

Days 1–3: Vienna
Three nights is the minimum that lets you do Schönbrunn properly (a full day, not a rushed morning), the Hofburg complex, and at least one long coffeehouse sit-down without feeling like you're racing a clock. Base yourself in or near the 1st district for walkability, or Neubau for a slightly cheaper, still-central alternative.
- Day 1: arrive, settle in, an easy afternoon walking the Innere Stadt and climbing St. Stephen's Cathedral's south tower if you have the legs for 343 steps.
- Day 2: Schönbrunn Palace and its gardens — genuinely a full day if you include the Gloriette viewpoint and the maze.
- Day 3: the Hofburg (Sisi Museum or Imperial Apartments, not necessarily both), then the Belvedere for Klimt's 'The Kiss,' finishing with a proper coffeehouse stop.
Days 4–5: Salzburg
The direct Railjet from Vienna takes about 2.5 hours — plenty of time to check in and still have an afternoon in the Altstadt. Two days covers Salzburg's compact old town plus a half-day for the Sound of Music circuit, without needing a car or public transit inside the city itself.
- Day 4: train to Salzburg, Altstadt walk, Hohensalzburg Fortress via the funicular for the sunset view.
- Day 5: Mirabell Gardens in the morning, a half-day Sound of Music minibus tour in the afternoon (book a day or two ahead in summer).
Days 6–7: Hallstatt
This is the leg most itineraries get wrong by trying to squeeze it into a single rushed day trip. With a week to spend, staying one night is the single best upgrade in this whole itinerary — you get the famous viewpoint at sunrise, with almost nobody else there, instead of fighting the 9am-to-4pm tour-bus crowd.
If an overnight in Hallstatt doesn't fit your budget or logistics, swap it for a day trip from Salzburg instead (about 2–2.5 hours each way) and spend your extra night back in Salzburg or Vienna — you'll still see the highlights, just with the crowd, not around it.
What to skip if you're tight on time
- Don't try to add Innsbruck or Graz to this specific week — both sit on separate rail lines and deserve their own dedicated trip, not a rushed bolt-on.
- Skip trying to see all three of the Hofburg's sub-attractions (Sisi Museum, Imperial Apartments, Spanish Riding School) — pick two, or you'll spend a whole day indoors in a city with plenty else to see.
- Don't do Hallstatt's salt mine and Skywalk AND the viewpoint AND the Bone House in one rushed afternoon — pick two if you're day-tripping.
Stretching it to 10 or 14 days
Add 3–4 days for the Tyrol Alps (Innsbruck, tacked onto the end since it's on its own western rail line) or Graz (about 2.5 hours from Vienna, best added at the start or end of the Vienna leg). Both genuinely deserve their own days rather than a squeeze into the classic week above.
