Greece

Everything you need to plan a great trip — from Athens' ancient ruins to the island you actually pick — without the guesswork.

Flight time 2–4h from Europe, 9–11h from US East CoastFrom $350–900 round-tripVisa Visa-free up to 90 days in any 180 for 60+ nationalities*Time zone GMT+2 (GMT+3 in summer/EEST)

Greece works well from 7 days (one region) to 14+ days (mainland plus 2 islands). Start with 2–3 days in Athens, then pick islands based on style: Santorini for views and romance, Mykonos for beach clubs and nightlife, Crete for a full standalone week of beaches, mountains, and history. Best months are May–June and September–October (warm, thinner crowds). EU/Schengen citizens travel freely; US/UK/Canada/Australia/NZ passport holders get 90 visa-free days per any 180-day period across the whole Schengen Area, with a new ETIAS online authorization expected in late 2026. Budget from $60/day backpacking, $130–220/day mid-range.

Greece has a way of making every other Mediterranean destination feel like it's trying too hard. It doesn't need a marketing campaign — just a few thousand years of history stacked next to genuinely excellent, unpretentious food, water so clear it looks retouched even in an unedited photo, and islands that somehow each manage to feel like their own distinct country. It's also, refreshingly, not as expensive as its reputation suggests once you get off Santorini's most famous cliffside.

This guide covers everything: where to go, how many days each place needs, when to fly, what it actually costs in USD and euros, and the entry rule for your specific passport — including the new EU border system rolling out this year that most guides haven't caught up on yet. Written to be genuinely useful, and updated through the season.

Questions people actually ask

How many days do I need in Greece?
7 days works for one region (Athens plus one island, or a single larger island like Crete). 10–14 days is the sweet spot for a mainland-plus-islands trip (Athens 2–3 days, then 2 islands at 3–4 nights each). 3+ weeks lets you add Thessaloniki or a third island without feeling rushed.
When is the best time to visit Greece?
Late May–June and September–early October are the sweet spot: warm enough to swim, noticeably thinner crowds than peak summer, and lower hotel prices. July–August is hottest, busiest, and priciest, especially on Santorini and Mykonos. Winter (November–March) is mild but many island hotels and restaurants close entirely.
How much does a trip to Greece cost?
Backpacker budget: from $60/day (hostels, casual tavernas, ferries in economy class). Mid-range comfort: $130–220/day (3–4-star hotels, restaurant meals, some day tours). A 10-day trip for two people, flights included, typically runs $2,800–$5,000 mid-range, more if Santorini or Mykonos feature heavily. Greece remains generally more affordable than Italy or France for a comparable trip.
Do I need a visa for Greece?
It depends on your passport — see our full visa & entry guide. EU/Schengen citizens don't need one. US, UK, Canadian, Australian, and New Zealand passport holders currently get 90 visa-free days per any rolling 180-day period across the whole Schengen Area. A new ETIAS online pre-travel authorization (€20, similar to the US ESTA) is expected to launch in Q4 2026 with a grace period before becoming mandatory — it isn't required yet as of mid-2026.
Is Greece safe to visit?
Yes, very safe by regional and Western European standards — violent crime against tourists is rare. The main real risk is petty theft (pickpocketing, bag-snatching) in crowded areas like central Athens and busy ferry ports, not anything more serious.
Santorini or Mykonos — which should I pick?
Santorini for caldera views, sunsets, and a romantic, slower pace — the stronger honeymoon pick. Mykonos for beach clubs, nightlife, and a livelier group-of-friends scene. See our full head-to-head comparison for the details, or do both — they're a 2–3 hour ferry apart.
Which Greek island is best for families?
Crete, by a clear margin — calmer, shallower beaches, real towns with normal infrastructure, and enough size and variety that one bad-weather day doesn't derail the whole trip. Santorini's cliffside towns involve a lot of stairs; Mykonos leans toward couples and groups.
Does eSIM work well in Greece?
Very well in cities and on the main islands — Airalo and Holafly offer data plans from about $5–20 for 7–15 days with solid 4G/5G coverage. A physical local SIM (Cosmote, Vodafone, Nova) is just as easy to grab on arrival and similarly priced.
