Hungary

Everything you need to plan a great trip — from Budapest's thermal baths to Lake Balaton's summer shoreline — without the guesswork.

Flight time 2-3h from Europe, 9-11h from the US East Coast, 12h+ with a stop from further outFrom $450-750 round-tripVisa Visa-free up to 90 days per 180-day period for many nationalities*Time zone GMT+1 (CET), GMT+2 in summer (CEST)

Budapest carries most of a Hungary trip on its own: 3-4 days covers the city properly, and pairs naturally with 2-3 days at Lake Balaton (May-September only) or a 2.5-hour train to Vienna for a longer Central Europe loop. Hungary is a full Schengen member — most Western nationalities get 90 visa-free days per rolling 180-day period, though two new EU border systems (EES, live since April 2026, and ETIAS, expected Q4 2026) add new steps in 2026. Budget from $50/day backpacking, $100-180/day mid-range comfort.

Hungary gets overlooked by travelers who default to Prague or Vienna for their Central Europe trip, and that's genuinely their loss. Budapest is cheaper than both, arguably more dramatic-looking split across its river, and has one thing neither of those cities can match: centuries-old thermal baths built over real natural hot springs, still in daily use by locals rather than preserved as a museum piece.

This guide covers everything: where to go, how many days, when to fly, what it actually costs in USD, and the current Schengen entry rules for your specific passport — including two new EU border systems that changed in 2026 and matter for your trip. Written to be genuinely useful, and updated through the season.

Questions people actually ask

How many days do I need in Hungary?
3-4 days covers Budapest properly on its own. Add 2-3 more days for Lake Balaton if you're traveling between May and September, or combine Budapest with a 2.5-hour train ride to Vienna or Bratislava for a longer 7-10 day Central Europe trip.
When is the best time to visit Budapest?
May-June and September hit the best balance of mild weather, manageable crowds, and reasonable prices. July-August is hottest and busiest (also the only realistic window for Lake Balaton). December is excellent for a different reason: Christmas markets, plus thermal baths that feel especially good in cold air.
Do I need a visa for Hungary?
Most likely not for stays under 90 days — Hungary is a full Schengen Area member, and passport holders from the US, Canada, UK, Australia, New Zealand, and dozens of other countries get visa-free entry for up to 90 days within any rolling 180-day period, shared across the whole Schengen Area. See our full visa & entry guide for the current details, including two new EU border systems (EES and ETIAS) affecting 2026 trips.
Is Budapest safe?
Yes, genuinely one of Europe's safer capitals by violent-crime standards. The one well-documented risk is financial: an unlicensed-taxi overcharging scam. Use the Bolt app or the official airport taxi desk and this risk essentially disappears.
What currency does Hungary use?
The Hungarian forint (HUF) — Hungary is an EU member but has not adopted the euro. As a rough 2026 planning anchor, $1 has recently traded in the low-to-mid 300s in forint, though rates move; check a current rate before your trip.
Which Budapest thermal bath should I visit?
Szechenyi for the grand, classic first-timer experience; Rudas for Ottoman-era atmosphere and a rooftop Danube view; Lukacs for a cheaper, more local feel. Note that Gellert, historically part of this conversation, is closed for renovation until 2028.
How much does a trip to Hungary cost?
Backpacker budget: from $50/day (hostels, street food, public transit). Mid-range comfort: $100-180/day (a 3-4 star hotel, restaurant meals, a thermal bath visit or two). Hungary runs noticeably cheaper than Western European capitals like Vienna, Paris, or Amsterdam.
Budapest or Vienna?
They're genuinely comparable and only 2.5 hours apart by direct train. Budapest wins on cost and the thermal baths; Vienna wins on museums, classical music, and polish. See our full Budapest vs. Vienna comparison — with 5+ days, doing both is the honest answer.
