Portugal

Everything you need to plan a great trip — from Lisbon's hills to Porto's port wine cellars — without the guesswork.

Flight time 2.5h from London, 7h from the US East Coast, 12-13h from the US West CoastFrom $350-900 round-trip from Europe/North AmericaVisa Visa-free up to 90 days per 180 days for 60+ nationalities*Time zone GMT+0 (WET)

Portugal rewards even a short trip: 5 days minimum for Lisbon + a Sintra day trip, 7-10 days ideal to add Porto and a day trip north. Best months are May-June and September-October (warm, fewer crowds, better prices than peak summer). Non-EU nationalities from roughly 60 countries currently get visa-free entry up to 90 days per 180-day period, with ETIAS pre-authorization expected to launch around late 2026. Budget from €50/day backpacking, €100-180/day mid-range — genuinely one of Western Europe's most affordable major destinations.

Portugal is the trip people keep quietly recommending to each other without it ever quite reaching the hype of Italy or France — which, honestly, is part of the appeal. It's cheaper than almost every one of its Western European neighbors, the food is excellent and underrated, the coastline ranges from dramatic Atlantic cliffs to genuinely warm swimmable coves, and you can cross the whole country by train faster than a lot of single-city commutes.

This guide covers everything: where to go, how many days each place needs, when to fly, what it actually costs in euros and dollars, and the Schengen entry rule for your specific passport — not a generic one-size-fits-all answer. Written to be genuinely useful, and updated through the season.

Questions people actually ask

How many days do I need in Portugal?
5 days is a reasonable minimum focused on Lisbon plus a Sintra day trip. 7-10 days is the sweet spot, adding Porto and a northern day trip (Aveiro or the Douro Valley). 12+ days lets you add the Algarve or Madeira without feeling rushed.
When is the best time to visit Portugal?
May-June and September-October give the best balance of warm weather, manageable crowds, and prices well below the July-August peak. Winter (November-February) is mild and cheap for city sightseeing but too cool for swimming; summer is hottest, sunniest, and most crowded, especially on the Algarve coast.
How much does a trip to Portugal cost?
Backpacker budget: from €50/day (guesthouses, casual meals, public transit). Mid-range comfort: €100-180/day (a 3-4 star hotel, restaurant meals, some day tours). A two-week trip for two people, flights included, typically runs €2,500-€4,000 mid-range — genuinely one of Western Europe's more affordable major destinations, 30-50% cheaper than France, the UK, or the Netherlands at comparable quality.
Do I need a visa for Portugal?
It depends on your passport — see our full visa & entry guide. As of mid-2026, non-EU nationalities from roughly 60 visa-exempt countries (US, Canada, UK, Australia, New Zealand and more) get visa-free entry to the whole Schengen Area for up to 90 days within any 180-day period. ETIAS, a simple online pre-authorization, is expected to launch around Q4 2026 with a transition period before it becomes mandatory.
Is Portugal safe to visit?
Yes, very much so — Portugal is consistently ranked among the safer countries in the world for travelers, and violent crime against tourists is rare. The realistic risk is pickpocketing on crowded trams and in busy tourist squares (Lisbon's Tram 28 is the best-known example) — normal city-travel awareness is enough.
Lisbon first, or Porto first?
Either order works well, since both cities have their own international airport. Most travelers land in Lisbon (more direct long-haul flight options) and take the under-3-hour train north to Porto, or do the reverse — see our full Lisbon-or-Porto comparison for a direct breakdown.
Should I visit the Algarve or Madeira?
Depends what you want: the Algarve for classic beach-resort holidays with warm swimmable water and cliff-backed coves; Madeira for dramatic hiking, natural volcanic pools, and a mild year-round climate that works even in winter. See our beaches and islands guide for the full comparison.
Does eSIM work well in Portugal?
Very well — Airalo and Holafly offer Europe-wide data plans from about €5-20 for a week or two with strong 4G/5G coverage nationwide. A physical local SIM (Vodafone, NOS, or MEO) from the airport or any phone shop is just as easy and similarly priced.
