Khao Sok National Park
Khao Sok National Park, between Khao Lak and Surat Thani, centers on Cheow Lan Lake — a limestone-karst reservoir dotted with floating raft houses. Entry is 300 THB (~$9). An overnight raft-house package runs roughly 2,500 THB ($70) budget to $300+ luxury per person, including transfers, meals, and a boat safari. It's one of the oldest rainforests on Earth, and gibbons, hornbills, and even wild elephants show up if you're lucky.
Everyone doing the Phuket-Krabi-Koh Samui loop drives right past Khao Sok, and that's a mistake. This is rainforest that's been standing for something like 160 million years — older than the Amazon — wrapped around a reservoir so dramatic it looks fake in photos. You paddle a canoe between limestone towers that shoot straight out of jade-green water, sleep on a raft that's actually floating on the lake, and wake up to gibbons calling through the mist. It's genuinely one of the best things you can do in southern Thailand, and it's a fraction as crowded as the islands.
Is Khao Sok a day trip or overnight?
You can technically do a day trip to Cheow Lan Lake — most operators run one — but don't. The lake is roughly 1.5-2 hours by road plus a long-tail boat ride from the park headquarters, so a day trip burns most of the day just getting there and back, leaving you maybe 2-3 hours actually on the water before you're bundled back into a van. Stay one night on a raft house instead and you get sunset over the karsts, a proper dawn boat safari when wildlife is actually active, and time to swim off your own deck. It's not much more money and it's a completely different trip.

Most travelers book a minivan straight from their Khao Lak, Phuket, or Krabi hotel — it's the same price as public transport and someone else deals with the connections. Khao Lak is by far the shortest hop, so if your itinerary is flexible, route your jungle stop through there rather than tacking it onto a Phuket departure.
Sleeping on Cheow Lan Lake — the floating raft houses
This is the whole reason to come. The floating bungalows are literally built on rafts anchored in coves around the lake — wooden or bamboo huts on pontoons, with a deck you can jump straight off into the water. There's no road access, so getting there is part of the experience: a long-tail boat weaving between 100-meter limestone cliffs that make the boat ride itself worth the trip. Book ahead, especially in high season (December-April) — boat and raft-house capacity is limited and popular operators sell out.

What's actually worth doing
- Sunrise or sunset boat safari on the lake — this is when wildlife actually shows up, not midday.
- Canoe/kayak paddle into the coves and around the karst formations right from your raft house.
- Diamond Cave (Tham Nam Thalu) — a river-cave trek included in most overnight packages, headlamps required.
- A jungle trek from park headquarters to one of the waterfalls (Wing Hin or Sip Et Chan) if you're doing the mainland side before or after the lake.
- Just sit on the deck — half the point of the raft houses is doing nothing while limestone cliffs go pink at sunset.
Bring cash — the park entrance fee is cash-only, and there are no ATMs once you're on the lake. Also pack a dry bag; boat transfers and canoe trips mean your stuff will get splashed at some point.
Best time to visit
Dry season, roughly December through April, is when the park is easiest — clearer water, less rain interrupting the boat safaris, and February-May is actually prime time for spotting wild elephants, hornbills, and langurs from the boat. Heavy rain runs June-November, which can mean choppier lake crossings and the occasional canceled boat safari — but it's also the greenest, quietest, and cheapest time to go if you don't mind an afternoon downpour.
Common mistakes
- Booking a rushed day trip instead of at least one night on the lake.
- Not booking the raft house far enough ahead in high season (Dec-Apr) — good operators do sell out.
- Assuming card payment works at the park gate — it's cash-only.
- Skipping bug spray — this is genuine rainforest, not a beach resort.
- Trying to combine Khao Sok with a same-day island transfer — give the lake its own full day, don't bolt it onto a travel day.
Wildlife you might see
Khao Sok's rainforest is home to gibbons (you'll almost certainly hear them even if you don't see them), hornbills, langurs, otters, wild boar, and — if you're genuinely lucky — wild elephants wading near the lakeshore at dawn or dusk. Tigers and clouded leopards technically live in the park too, but seeing one is closer to a lottery win than something to plan around. Go into the boat safari treating any big sighting as a bonus, not a guarantee, and you won't be disappointed.
