Nafplio

Nafplio is the town most Greece itineraries skip entirely because it doesn't have an airport or a ferry dock, which is exactly why it's stayed this charming — Venetian mansions, a genuinely walkable old town, and a laid-back seafront that's never been swallowed by the tour-bus economy the way some ancient sites nearby have.

How many days do you need in Nafplio?

One night covers the old town and the Palamidi Fortress comfortably; two nights lets you add a day trip to Mycenae and Epidaurus without rushing. It works well as a 1–2 night stop on a wider Peloponnese loop, or as a slower-paced alternative to basing entirely in Athens for a few days.

Palamidi Fortress — the climb everyone talks about

Eight bastions of Venetian military engineering built in barely three years in the 1710s, sitting on a hill above town. The famous route up is a steep staircase carved into the cliff — often quoted as '999 steps,' though the real count is closer to 900 — or you can drive to a car park near the upper gate if the climb isn't for you. Either way, the view over the old town, the harbor, and Bourtzi from the top is the reason to come.

Bourtzi — the castle in the harbor

A small fortified islet just 600 meters offshore, topped by a Venetian castle built in 1473 to control the harbor entrance and block pirate raids. Short boat trips run from the old town's harbor, about 5 minutes each way, weather permitting — a nice, low-effort add-on to an evening walk along the water.

The Old Town

1. Syntagma Square — the old town's central square, ringed by Venetian and neoclassical buildings, including the building that briefly served as Greece's first parliament.
2. Staikopoulou Street — the main taverna and shopping street, narrow and lively, especially in the evening.
3. Arvanitia Promenade — a roughly 1km coastal walking path beneath the Palamidi cliffs, with views over the Argolic Gulf and Bourtzi in the distance.
4. Akronafplia — the oldest fortified section of the town, on the headland behind the old town, quieter and less visited than Palamidi.

Nafplio isn't primarily a beach destination, but Arvanitia is a small, clear-water pebble cove right at the edge of the old town beneath Palamidi — genuinely convenient for a swim between sightseeing rather than a purpose-built beach trip.

Getting to Nafplio

About a 2-hour drive from Athens (roughly 140km) via a good toll motorway, or about 2.5 hours by KTEL intercity bus. There's no train service and no airport — a rental car is the most practical option if you're also planning to see Mycenae, Epidaurus, or Tiryns, since public transport between those sites and Nafplio is thin.

Mistakes worth avoiding

• Treating Nafplio as a rushed lunch stop between Athens and the rest of the Peloponnese — the old town and Palamidi genuinely deserve an overnight.
• Skipping Epidaurus because 'it's just another ruin' — the acoustics alone (and, if you're lucky, a summer performance in the ancient theater itself) make it one of the most memorable ancient sites in Greece.
• Driving up to Palamidi's car park without also walking at least part of the staircase — the view from partway up, looking back over the harbor, is worth the short detour even if you don't do all 900-plus steps.

Best time to visit

Spring (March–April) and fall (September–October) are the sweet spot — mild enough for the Palamidi climb and Arvanitia's promenade without summer's heat, and with noticeably fewer visitors than Athens or the islands see in the same months.
