Rhodes
Rhodes deserves 4–5 nights — split between Rhodes Town's Old Town (a UNESCO World Heritage Site, still fully lived-in behind its medieval walls) and a base near Lindos or the east coast for beach time. The Palace of the Grand Master (about €8) and the Street of the Knights are the headline sights; Lindos's clifftop acropolis and Anthony Quinn Bay's turquoise water are the best day trip. Direct flights from Athens take about an hour.
Rhodes gets filed under 'package-holiday island' by people who've only seen its resort strip, which undersells the actual old town at its center — genuinely one of the largest and best-preserved medieval town centers in Europe, still a real, working neighborhood rather than a museum piece.
How many days do you need in Rhodes?
Four to five nights lets you properly split time: two in or near Rhodes Town for the Old Town and museums, two to three further south near Lindos or the east-coast beaches. Less than that and you'll end up choosing between history and beach time rather than getting both.
Rhodes Old Town — Europe's largest inhabited medieval town
Wandering the Old Town's cobbled lanes, city walls, and gates is free. The headline paid sight is the Palace of the Grand Master (around €8 for adults), the Knights Hospitaller's former headquarters, with roughly 18 of its 300 rooms open to visitors and some genuinely striking Hellenistic and Byzantine-era floor mosaics. The Street of the Knights, a cobbled lane lined with former knights' lodgings leading to the Archaeological Museum, is the Old Town's most photographed corner.

The Old Town's Cannon Gate entrance, right by the Palace of the Grand Master, is also where you can access the city walls walkway — a good combined stop rather than two separate detours.
Lindos — the day trip everyone does, for good reason
About an hour south of Rhodes Town, Lindos pairs a whitewashed hillside village with an ancient acropolis and a Crusader-era castle on the clifftop above it, with sweeping Aegean views. It gets genuinely crowded with tour groups by mid-morning — arrive early or come in the late afternoon instead. Donkey rides up the hill are on offer but widely criticized for the animals' treatment; the walk up is steep but manageable and takes about 15–20 minutes.

Getting to Rhodes
Direct flights from Athens take about an hour, with frequent departures and, in summer, direct routes from several European cities too. Ferries run from Piraeus (Athens' port) — a long overnight or multi-stop journey of roughly 15 hours — or shorter hops from neighboring Dodecanese islands and, seasonally, from Turkey's nearby coast.
Mistakes worth avoiding
- Basing yourself only in Rhodes Town for the whole trip and doing Lindos as a rushed single day — an overnight near Lindos lets you see it without the tour-bus crowds.
- Visiting the Old Town in the middle of a summer afternoon — the stone streets hold heat; early morning or evening is both cooler and quieter.
- Skipping the east-coast beaches for the busier, more developed west coast resorts near the airport — the east side has calmer water and better snorkeling.
Best time to visit
May–June and September are the sweet spot — warm, swimmable weather without July–August's peak heat and crowds. Rhodes has one of the longest tourist seasons in Greece thanks to its far-southern position, with many hotels open from April through October.
