Kourion & Kolossi Castle
Kourion is a Greco-Roman city on a cliff above the sea near Limassol, centered on a restored amphitheatre still used for concerts, plus Roman floor mosaics at the House of Eustolios (entry €4.50/$5). Kolossi Castle, a 13th-century fortress about 20 minutes further west, was the historic production site of Commandaria, one of the world's oldest named wines (entry €2.50/$2.70). Both sit within about 20 minutes of Limassol and pair naturally into a single half-day trip.
Most Cyprus itineraries treat Kourion and Kolossi Castle as a rushed afternoon add-on to a Limassol base, if they make the list at all — which undersells both. One is a Roman theatre with a sea view most modern concert venues would envy; the other is a working medieval castle with a genuinely good story about wine.
Kourion: a Greco-Roman theatre with the best view in Cyprus
Kourion was a significant Greco-Roman city-kingdom on a bluff above Episkopi Bay, largely destroyed by an earthquake around 365 AD and never fully rebuilt. Its centerpiece, a restored amphitheatre carved into the hillside, looks straight out over the Mediterranean and is still an active concert and festival venue today — genuinely one of the most dramatically sited ancient theatres anywhere in the Eastern Mediterranean.

The House of Eustolios and the Sanctuary of Apollo Hylates
Beyond the theatre, the House of Eustolios preserves well-kept Roman floor mosaics, including a personification of Ktisis (Creation) at the entrance. A short walk or drive from the main site, the Sanctuary of Apollo Hylates — a temple complex dedicated to Apollo as protector of the woods — is included on some tickets and worth the short detour if you have an extra 30-45 minutes.
Kolossi Castle: knights, sugar, and the origins of Commandaria
About 20 minutes west of Limassol, Kolossi Castle began as a 13th-century property of the Knights of the Order of St. John (rebuilt into its current tower form around 1454), who used the surrounding estate to produce sugar and a sweet fortified wine they exported as 'vin de Commanderie' — the direct ancestor of Commandaria, still made in the Troodos foothills today and one of the oldest named wines still in continuous production anywhere in the world. The castle itself is compact (a single main tower you can fully climb in 30-45 minutes) but genuinely atmospheric, with vaulted rooms and rooftop views over the surrounding citrus groves.
Combining both in one visit
Kourion and Kolossi Castle sit close enough together (about a 15-minute drive apart, both roughly 20 minutes from Limassol) that most visitors do them back to back in a single half-day: Kourion first thing in the morning to beat both the heat and the crowds, then Kolossi Castle and a Commandaria tasting in a nearby village on the way back. Add Aphrodite's Rock, another 20-30 minutes further along the coast road toward Paphos, if you want to turn it into a fuller day.

When to go
Both sites have almost no shade, and Kourion in particular sits fully exposed on an open cliff top — visiting between roughly 11am and 3pm in July-August is genuinely uncomfortable. Go at opening or in the last two hours before closing, and bring water and a hat regardless of season.
Getting there
- From Limassol — about 20 minutes by car to either site; no direct public bus serves Kourion or Kolossi, so a rental car or taxi is the realistic option.
- From Paphos — roughly 45-50 minutes by car via the coast road, easily combined with a stop at Aphrodite's Rock along the way.
- From Larnaca — about 1-1.25 hours by car; most visitors from Larnaca combine the trip with a Limassol stop rather than a straight there-and-back day.
Common mistakes
- Confusing Kourion with 'Curium' and assuming they're different places — Curium is simply the Latinized name for the same site, used interchangeably in older guidebooks and academic sources.
- Skipping Kolossi Castle because it sounds minor next to Kourion — it's a quick, cheap stop (30-45 minutes, €2.50) with a genuinely interesting wine-history angle most visitors don't expect.
- Visiting without water or shade protection in summer — there's essentially none at either site, and the cliff-top exposure at Kourion is more intense than it looks in photos.
