Ninh Binh

Both use small rowboats — usually paddled by a local boatman or boatwoman, often using their feet on the oars on the Tam Coc route, a genuinely memorable detail — gliding through karst-lined canals and short cave tunnels. If you only have half a day, pick Tam Coc; if you have a full day or want a quieter, longer float, choose Trang An.
Boatmen and boatwomen on both routes work hard for a modest fixed wage — a small tip (20,000–50,000 VND, roughly $1–2) directly to your rower at the end is customary and genuinely appreciated, on top of the ticket price.
Mua Cave — the classic viewpoint climb
Mua Cave itself is a minor stop — the real draw is the roughly 500-step climb up the adjacent limestone peak to a viewpoint overlooking the Ngo Dong River winding through rice paddies and karsts, the single most-photographed shot in Ninh Binh. Entry runs about 100,000 VND (~$4). Go for sunrise or late afternoon for the best light and to avoid the worst of the midday heat on the climb.
Hoa Lu — Vietnam's ancient capital
Hoa Lu served as Vietnam's capital in the 10th and 11th centuries, and the site preserves temples dedicated to two of that era's kings, set against the same karst backdrop. It's a quieter, more historical stop than Trang An or Tam Coc, easily paired with either on the same day since it sits just a few minutes away, and entry is typically free or a small nominal fee bundled with some Trang An ticket routes.

Mistakes worth avoiding
- Doing Ninh Binh as a rushed half-day squeezed between other Hanoi day trips — both Trang An and Tam Coc reward unhurried time on the water, not a 20-minute paddle.
- Skipping Mua Cave's climb because '500 steps sounds like a lot' — it's a moderate 30–45 minute climb, not technical, and the view is the single best photo op in the region.
