Da Nang

Da Nang doesn't get the same hype as Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City, and that's exactly why a lot of returning travelers rate it as their favorite Vietnamese city — a genuine beach town with real infrastructure, less chaos than the big two, and the country's most photographed bridge (a giant golden hand-shaped structure) a short drive up the mountain.

How many days do you need in Da Nang?

Three to four days covers it well: one day for My Khe Beach and the city itself (Dragon Bridge, Marble Mountains), one full day at Ba Na Hills and the Golden Bridge, and a day trip to Hoi An's Ancient Town (about 30–45 minutes away) or My Son's Cham ruins. Many travelers use Da Nang as their base and do Hoi An as a day trip rather than the reverse, since Da Nang has better beach access and more hotel variety.

My Khe Beach

My Khe stretches roughly 20km along Da Nang's coastline — soft white sand, gentle, swimmable waves, and free public access with plenty of beachfront cafes and loungers for rent. It's calmer and less developed than Nha Trang's main strip, with the city's high-rise hotels set back rather than crowding the shoreline directly. Best swimming conditions run roughly February–August; September–January brings a higher chance of rough surf and the tail end of the central typhoon season.

The Golden Bridge at Ba Na Hills

Ba Na Hills sits about 25km/45 minutes from central Da Nang, reached by one of the world's longest cable car systems up the mountain. The 2026 entry ticket — covering the cable car, Golden Bridge, French Village, and themed park areas — runs roughly 950,000–1,000,000 VND (about $37–39) for adults, with the ticket valid across multiple days if you can't see it all in one visit. Go on a clear weekday if your schedule allows — cloud cover regularly obscures the view, and weekends bring noticeably bigger crowds.

Other city sights

1. The Dragon Bridge — a genuine spectacle on weekend nights (Saturday/Sunday around 9pm), when the dragon-shaped bridge breathes fire and water for a few minutes; free to watch from either bank.
2. Marble Mountains — five limestone-and-marble hills south of the city with cave pagodas and a lift to the top viewpoint; roughly 45,000 VND (~$2) entry plus a small lift fee, a good half-day stop.
3. Son Tra Peninsula (Monkey Mountain) — a forested peninsula with the Linh Ung Pagoda's giant Lady Buddha statue and coastal viewpoints, best by scooter or private car.

What it costs

Mistakes worth avoiding

• Booking Ba Na Hills on a day with a poor weather forecast if you have any flexibility — cloud cover genuinely can hide the Golden Bridge's view entirely.
• Treating Da Nang as just a stopover to Hoi An — the city itself has enough beach, food, and sights to justify 2–3 days on its own merits.
• Skipping sun and rip-current caution at My Khe during rough-surf months (roughly September–January) — flags are posted but not always strictly enforced; check conditions before swimming out.
