The Imperial Treasury
The Treasury is where most visitors spend the longest stretch of their visit, and for good reason โ it holds the Topkapi Dagger (three enormous emeralds set into a gold hilt, the centerpiece of a 1964 heist film) and the Spoonmaker's Diamond, an 86-carat pear-cut stone that's one of the largest of its kind on public display anywhere. Expect a genuine crowd crush around both display cases in peak season.
The Harem
The Harem was the private residence of the sultan's family โ his mother, wives, and children โ not the reductive stereotype the word conjures in English. It's a maze of over 400 rooms, though only a fraction is open to visitors, decorated in some of the finest ฤฐznik tilework anywhere in Turkey.
- The Courtyard of the Favorites โ a quieter inner courtyard once reserved for the sultan's closest companions.
- The Sultan's private apartments โ ornately tiled rooms that show a very different scale of luxury than the palace's public courtyards.

The Fourth Courtyard view
Skip past this at your peril โ the Fourth Courtyard's terrace and the Konyalฤฑ Restaurant's outdoor seating both look straight out over the Golden Horn and the Bosphorus, arguably the best panoramic view in Sultanahmet, and it's included in the standard ticket rather than a paid extra.
How much time to budget
Two to three hours covers the palace, Treasury, and Harem without rushing. Pair it with Hagia Sophia (a five-minute walk away) for a full, satisfying half-day of Sultanahmet's two biggest sights, ideally starting at Topkapi right at opening to beat both the crowds and the midday heat in summer.
