- The main dome โ 31 meters wide, an engineering feat that held the record for the world's largest cathedral dome for nearly a thousand years.
- The Deesis mosaic โ a Byzantine mosaic of Christ flanked by Mary and John the Baptist, partly damaged but genuinely moving to see in person, visible from the upper gallery.
- The Weeping Column โ a column near the entrance with a hole worn into it by centuries of visitors touching it and turning a thumb, believed to bring luck or healing.
- The Sultan's loge and mihrab โ Ottoman-era additions showing the building's second life as an imperial mosque, sitting right alongside the Byzantine mosaics.
Mosque etiquette โ not just a suggestion
- Shoulders and knees covered for everyone; women need a headscarf (loaner scarves are available free at the entrance).
- Shoes off before stepping onto the carpeted prayer area โ bring a small bag to carry them if you're also visiting other sites the same day.
- No flash photography, and keep voices down โ this is an active place of worship, not just a museum exhibit, even during tourist visiting hours.
Best time to visit
Right at opening or after 4pm are the two calmest windows โ mid-morning to early afternoon overlaps with both the biggest tour-group waves and the Friday prayer closure specifically. Hagia Sophia and Topkapi Palace sit a five-minute walk apart, so pairing an early Hagia Sophia visit with Topkapi right after is the efficient way to do both without doubling back across Sultanahmet Square.
Hagia Sophia vs. the Blue Mosque
They face each other across the same square, so the comparison is inevitable: Hagia Sophia costs โฌ25 and carries the deeper, stranger layered history (cathedral, mosque, museum, mosque again); the Blue Mosque is free, built as a mosque from the start, and named for its interior's thousands of handmade blue ฤฐznik tiles. Most visitors do both back to back โ they take under two hours combined.
