Destinations in Saudi Arabia — where to go

Riyadh and Jeddah — two genuinely different faces of Saudi Arabia, and where to base yourself for each.

Saudi Arabia's two headline cities feel like different countries. Riyadh is the capital — modern, business-focused, and the base for day-tripping to Diriyah, the birthplace of the first Saudi state. Jeddah is the more relaxed, historic Red Sea port city, with a UNESCO-listed old town and the easiest access to Red Sea diving. Most first-time trips combine one city with AlUla, the country's headline attraction, over 7–10 days.

Saudi Arabia only opened its doors to leisure tourists in 2019, which means almost nothing here has had time to turn into a tourist trap yet — you're arriving early on a destination that's about to be everywhere. Riyadh and Jeddah anchor the two ends of the country and couldn't feel more different from each other. Here's an honest look at both, and how to split your time.

Questions people actually ask

Should I visit Riyadh or Jeddah first?
Neither order is wrong — most international flights land in one or the other, and both have their own domestic connections to AlUla. Riyadh has the more dramatic modern skyline and the Diriyah day trip; Jeddah has the historic old town and the Red Sea. If you can, do both.
How many days does Saudi Arabia need?
7–10 days covers one city plus AlUla comfortably. 10–14 days lets you add the second city and a slower pace, especially if you want to dive the Red Sea from Jeddah.
Can I visit both cities without a domestic flight?
Not practically — Riyadh and Jeddah are roughly 950 km (590 miles) apart, about a 9–10 hour drive. A domestic flight is under 2 hours and inexpensive; nearly everyone flies between them.
