Destinations in Romania — where to go

Where to base yourself — Europe's most underrated capital, and the gateway to Transylvania.

Romania's two essential bases are Bucharest (the capital — grand, gritty, and criminally underrated, 2–3 days) and Brasov (Transylvania's most walkable base, ringed by mountains and 20 minutes from Dracula's Castle, 2–3 days). Most first-time trips fly into Bucharest, spend a couple of nights, then head north into Transylvania by train, bus, or rental car for the castles and medieval towns.

Romania has an image problem it doesn't deserve. Say the name and most people picture either Dracula or 1989 news footage — not fortified Saxon churches, wolves and bears actually living wild in the Carpathians, or a capital city with more Art Nouveau buildings than half of Western Europe's postcard cities. Here's where to actually go, and what each place is genuinely like once you're standing in it.

Questions people actually ask

What's the best first-time Romania itinerary?
Bucharest (2–3 days) followed by a Transylvania loop through Brasov, Bran, Peles, and Sighisoara (7–10 days) is the classic, well-tested route. Add the Transfagarasan road and a day in the painted-monastery region of Bucovina if you have two weeks or more.
Should I fly into Bucharest or straight to Transylvania?
Bucharest, almost always — it's the country's main international gateway with by far the most direct flight options. From there it's a comfortable 2.5–3 hour train or drive north to Brasov.
Is Bucharest worth visiting, or should I skip straight to the castles?
Worth visiting — it's an easy mistake to treat it as a mere airport layover. Two nights is enough to see why locals get genuinely annoyed when visitors skip it entirely for 'the real Romania' up north.
