May–June and September are Romania's sweet spot: mild weather, green landscapes, and noticeably thinner crowds than peak summer. July–August is the only reliable window for driving the full Transfagarasan highway and brings festival season (Sighisoara's medieval festival, Cluj's Untold), but also the biggest crowds and heat. December has real charm — Christmas markets and snow-dusted castles — though some mountain roads and rural guesthouses scale back.
There isn't a genuinely bad time to visit Romania — even winter has its own appeal — but the month you pick changes the trip meaningfully: what's open, what's driveable, and how many tour buses you're sharing Bran Castle with.

These three months share the same appeal: mild, comfortable weather for walking Bucharest's Old Town or hiking Mount Tampa, green (or gently turning) landscapes, and noticeably fewer tour buses at Bran and Peles castles than the July-August rush. September has the added bonus of overlapping with Dealu Mare's wine harvest, if a vineyard day trip is on your list.
Peak season: July-August
July-August is the only reliable window for driving the Transfagarasan highway in full — it typically opens late June and stays open through October, but early and late in that window carries more weather risk. If the mountain road is a trip priority, July-August guarantees the best odds, at the cost of the year's biggest crowds and heat.
This is also festival season: Sighisoara's medieval festival usually runs in late July (dates shift year to year), and Cluj-Napoca's Untold Festival — one of the world's biggest electronic and dance-music festivals — runs August 6-9, 2026. Both are genuinely worth timing a trip around if they interest you, but expect accommodation prices and availability to tighten accordingly, especially in Cluj during Untold week.
Winter: December-February
Bucharest and Sibiu's Christmas markets (December) bring real festive atmosphere, and snow on Bran or Peles castle is a genuinely different, beautiful look at both. The trade-offs: the Transfagarasan is closed, some rural Transylvania guesthouses reduce hours or close for the season, and driving in the mountains requires winter tires and real caution.
What to avoid
- Planning a Transfagarasan-centered trip for anytime outside late June-October — the road is simply closed by snow the rest of the year.
- Visiting Bran Castle at midday in July-August without a plan — arrive right at opening or in the last 90 minutes before close to dodge the worst of the tour-bus crush.
- Booking Cluj-Napoca accommodation late if your trip overlaps with Untold Festival week (August 6-9, 2026) — both price and availability tighten citywide, not just at the festival venue.
