Days 1-4: Krakow
Land in Krakow (or connect from Warsaw's airport, about an hour by train) and give yourself four full days. Day 1 is the Main Market Square and Wawel Castle on foot — both walkable from almost any Old Town or Kazimierz hotel. Day 2 is Auschwitz-Birkenau, non-negotiable as a full day, not a half-day add-on. Day 3 is the Wieliczka Salt Mine (a half day) plus an afternoon in Kazimierz. Day 4 is a buffer — a milk bar crawl, a vodka tasting, or simply a slower morning before the train.
Book your Auschwitz-Birkenau slot before you book anything else on this itinerary. Since March 1, 2026, every entry pass — free general admission or a paid guided tour — must be reserved online through the memorial's own site; on-site ticket sales have been discontinued entirely, and slots for May-September regularly sell out days to weeks ahead.
Day 5: the train to Warsaw
The fast EIC/EIP train covers Krakow to Warsaw in about 2 hours 20 minutes for roughly $25, dropping you close to both Old Towns — no need to rent a car for this leg, and booking a day or two ahead through koleo.pl or the intercity.pl app gets a meaningfully cheaper fare than a same-day ticket.
Days 6-8: Warsaw
Day 6 is the rebuilt Old Town, the Royal Castle, and the Warsaw Rising Museum (budget at least 2-3 hours — it's genuinely one of Europe's better modern-history museums). Day 7 is the contemporary city: the Palace of Culture and Science observation deck, Lazienki Park, and the restaurant scene the city doesn't get enough credit for. Day 8 is a flex day — the POLIN Museum on Polish Jewish history, or simply more time in whichever neighborhood you liked best.
Days 9-10: pick your add-on
- Gdansk — about 2.5-3 hours from Warsaw by direct train. Choose this if you want a genuine Baltic beach town (Sopot, 20 minutes further by local train), colorful Hanseatic architecture, and Solidarity-movement history at the European Solidarity Centre.
- Zakopane — reached from Krakow (about 2 hours by bus), not Warsaw, so this option works better if you loop back through Krakow at the end of the trip instead of ending in Warsaw. Choose this for Tatra Mountain hiking (June-September) or skiing (December-March).
If Zakopane is your pick, flip the itinerary: do Warsaw first (days 1-3, flying into Warsaw Chopin), then Krakow (days 4-7, including Auschwitz-Birkenau and Wieliczka), then Zakopane (days 8-10) as your final stop before flying home from Krakow's Balice Airport instead of backtracking.

Mistakes that wreck a 10-day trip
- Booking Auschwitz-Birkenau as an afterthought — do this first, before hotels or flights, since it's the one piece of the itinerary that genuinely sells out.
