Mexico Trip Cost Calculator
A trip to Mexico runs roughly $40/day backpacking, $110/day mid-range, or $300+/day for luxury, plus $300โ750 round-trip flights per person from a major hub. Use the calculator below to get a number matched to your exact trip length and group size.
Every travel-cost article on the internet gives you one number, as if a backpacker and a honeymooner spend the same amount. They don't. Below is a real calculator that adjusts for your actual trip length, group size, and travel style, plus the static numbers behind it so you can sanity-check the math yourself.

What's included at each budget level
- Backpacker (~$40/day): hostels in Mexico City's Roma Norte or Tulum Pueblo, street tacos and market meals, colectivos and the Metro.
- Mid-range (~$110/day): 3-4 star hotels in Condesa or Playa del Carmen, restaurant meals, a Chichen Itza or Teotihuacan day tour.
- Luxury (~$300/day): a boutique beach-zone hotel in Tulum or a Cancun all-inclusive resort, private guides, tasting-menu dinners.
How to spend less without a worse trip
- Tacos al pastor cost $1-2.50 each from a street stand โ filling up on street food for most meals in Mexico City or Oaxaca is the single easiest way to eat extremely well for very little.
- Tulum's beach-zone hotels run genuinely upscale prices despite the boho reputation โ Tulum Pueblo (the actual town, a short bike ride from the beach) is significantly cheaper for both food and lodging if budget matters more than a beachfront address.
The single biggest lever is almost always accommodation and food choices, not flights โ flying a day earlier or later rarely saves much, but swapping one hotel category or eating like a local for half your meals usually saves more than any flight-timing trick.
