Cancun or Puerto Vallarta: Which Coast Is Right for You?
Choose Cancun for the widest range of direct flights, calm turquoise Caribbean water, and easy day trips to Chichen Itza and cenotes. Choose Puerto Vallarta for a more walkable historic town feel, whale watching (December-March), and a jungle-backed Pacific bay. Both have similar hurricane-season timing (June-November) and a comparable range of hotel prices — the real difference is coast and vibe, not cost.
These two get compared less often than Cancun-or-Tulum, but they're actually Mexico's two biggest beach-vacation decision points for first-timers deciding between the Caribbean and the Pacific. Here's the honest version.

If you want the widest flight options, the calmest swimmable water, and easy access to Maya ruins and cenotes, pick Cancun. If you want whale watching, a more walkable historic Old Town feel, and a jungle-and-mountain backdrop, pick Puerto Vallarta. Neither is 'better' outright — they're genuinely different coasts.
If you want the easiest flight
Cancun has the larger overall network from both the US and Canada, but Puerto Vallarta is very strong specifically from the US West Coast (roughly 2h47m nonstop from Dallas-Fort Worth, dozens of weekly flights from Los Angeles) — check your specific home airport before assuming Cancun automatically wins on flight time.
If whale watching matters
Puerto Vallarta, clearly — humpback whales migrate through the Bahia de Banderas roughly mid-November through March, peaking December-February, with dedicated tours running $50-90. Cancun's Caribbean side doesn't have a comparable whale season.
If cenotes and ancient ruins are the priority
Cancun wins here — the whole Yucatan cenote network and Chichen Itza are within a few hours, genuinely easy day trips. Puerto Vallarta's Pacific side has no equivalent; its natural-wonder draw is marine life and the Sierra Madre backdrop, not underground rivers or Maya cities.
If you want a walkable historic town feel
Puerto Vallarta's Zona Romantica (Old Town) has cobblestone streets and a genuine Old-World feel that Cancun's purpose-built Hotel Zone doesn't try to replicate. Cancun's more historic, walkable alternative is really Playa del Carmen or Merida, a bit further afield.
Can you compare them on cost?
Not meaningfully — both run the full range from budget to luxury, and the honest driver of cost is which specific hotel tier and season you pick, not the destination itself. Puerto Vallarta's all-inclusive market is a bit smaller than Cancun's, so boutique, non-all-inclusive stays are relatively more common there.
