Udaipur

How many days do you need in Udaipur?
Two full days works well: one for the City Palace and its museum, one for Lake Pichola (a sunset boat ride is the single best thing to do here) and the old city's temples and bazaars. A third day gives room for a day trip to Kumbhalgarh Fort or the Jain temples at Ranakpur, both a couple of hours outside the city.
The City Palace
A sprawling complex built and expanded by successive Mewar rulers over roughly four centuries, overlooking Lake Pichola from the city's eastern shore. Entry to the outer complex runs about ₹30 ($0.30) for Indian nationals and roughly ₹600 ($6.50) for foreign visitors, with the museum wing (courtyards, mirrored halls, royal artifacts) sold as a separate ticket. Lake Pichola — the sunset boat ride
The single best thing to do in Udaipur: a boat ride on Lake Pichola as the sun sets behind the City Palace and the Aravalli hills. Boats run roughly 10am–5pm (₹400/$4.30 daytime, ₹700/$7.50 sunset, both per adult), stopping at Jagmandir Island, a smaller 17th-century palace-turned-restaurant in the middle of the lake. Book the sunset slot specifically — it sells out first, and it's the whole reason to do this.

- Jagdish Temple — a large, intricately carved Hindu temple a short walk from the City Palace, free to enter and genuinely worth the detour.
- Bagore Ki Haveli — a restored 18th-century mansion on the lakefront with a nightly traditional Rajasthani dance show, a good low-key evening if you're not doing the boat ride that night.
- Saheliyon Ki Bari — a small, formal garden with fountains, built for royal ladies-in-waiting — a pleasant, quieter stop away from the lakefront crowds.
The old city and shopping
Udaipur's old city, on the lake's east side, is a genuinely pleasant place to just wander — narrow lanes, rooftop cafes with palace views, and shops selling miniature paintings, textiles, and silver jewelry. As in Jaipur, treat any unsolicited shop recommendation from a driver or guide with real skepticism.
Getting to Udaipur
Maharana Pratap Airport connects Udaipur to Delhi, Mumbai, and Jaipur with frequent flights (roughly 1–1.5 hours from Delhi). By road, Udaipur sits a bit off the main Golden Triangle loop — most travelers reach it as an extension from Jaipur (about 6–7 hours by road) rather than a rushed add-on.
