Destinations in Hungary — where to go
Budapest itself, and the lake that every local escapes to in summer.
Hungary is really a one-city-plus-one-lake trip for most travelers: Budapest (3-5 days, split between hilly Buda and flat, buzzing Pest) and Lake Balaton (2-3 days, Central Europe's biggest lake and the classic summer add-on). Combine both for a relaxed week, or do Budapest alone as a 3-4 night city break paired with Vienna or Prague.
Hungary doesn't try to be a 20-stop itinerary, and that's kind of the point. Budapest carries almost the entire trip on its own — it's genuinely one of Europe's most underrated capitals, cheaper and less crowded than Prague or Vienna but every bit as good-looking. Lake Balaton is the classic add-on once you've done the city. Here's an honest take on both.
