Jumeirah and Dubai's Beaches
Jumeirah is Dubai's classic beach district — lower-rise than Downtown or Marina, home to the sail-shaped Burj Al Arab, and lined with genuinely good public beaches: La Mer (a trendy, Instagram-friendly beachfront development) and Kite Beach (watersports, food trucks, a long paved boardwalk for running or cycling). It suits travelers who want a beach-town pace with the rest of Dubai still a 20-30 minute taxi away.
If Downtown is Dubai showing off and Marina is Dubai partying, Jumeirah is Dubai relaxing. It's the lower-rise, beach-town side of the city — the kind of place where a morning run along the water and an afternoon in the sand are genuinely the plan, not an afterthought between attractions.
La Mer
A newer beachfront development with a colorful, design-forward boardwalk, a water park, and a strong concentration of cafes and restaurants right on the sand. It's one of the more photogenic beach stretches in the city and a popular weekend spot for both residents and visitors.
Kite Beach
A long public beach with a genuinely excellent paved running/cycling path, food trucks, and — as the name suggests — a strong kitesurfing scene when the wind picks up (best November-March). Kite Beach also has one of the best straight-on views of the Burj Al Arab, especially at sunset.
| Beach | Best for | Vibe |
|---|---|---|
| La Mer | Photos, casual dining, families | Colorful, design-led, lively |
| Kite Beach | Watersports, running/cycling, sunset views | Sportier, more laid-back |
| Jumeirah Public Beach | A quieter, more local stretch | Simple, uncrowded, free |
Public beaches in Dubai are free and open to everyone, and swimwear is completely normal on the sand itself — the modest-dress expectation applies to malls, souks, and public streets away from the beach, not the beach itself.
The Burj Al Arab
The sail-shaped hotel that put Dubai's skyline on the map in the late 1990s is still one of the most recognizable buildings in the world, and it's visible from several points along the Jumeirah coastline — Kite Beach and Umm Suqeim Beach both have unobstructed views without needing to book a room or a (very expensive) meal there.
What to do
- Watch the sunset from Kite Beach with the Burj Al Arab silhouetted in the background — free, and one of the best photo spots in the city.
- Wander La Mer's boardwalk for an afternoon of cafes, shops, and a water park if traveling with kids.
- Try kitesurfing or paddleboarding — several operators along Kite Beach rent gear and offer lessons for beginners.
Getting around from Jumeirah
Jumeirah isn't on the Metro line directly, so taxis and ride-hailing apps are the main way to reach it — roughly 20-30 minutes to Downtown or Marina depending on traffic. It's a reasonable trade-off for the calmer pace and direct beach access.
