The capital that's finally having its moment, and the Ottoman old town everyone forgets.

Albania's two must-see inland stops are Tirana (the capital — colorful, chaotic, genuinely fun, 1–2 days) and Berat (the UNESCO 'city of a thousand windows,' a beautifully preserved Ottoman-era old town, 1–2 days). Most first-time visitors combine one or both with a week on the Albanian Riviera coast. Together, 3–4 days inland plus 5–7 on the coast makes a complete, unrushed 10-day trip.

Albania spent decades as a footnote on the European map — closed off, misunderstood, skipped. That era is very much over, and the reversal is happening fast: flight routes are multiplying, boutique hotels are opening in restored Ottoman houses, and every travel publication has run some version of 'the last affordable stretch of the Mediterranean' in the past two years. The Slow Loris Take

Everyone assumes Albania's tourism boom means you can now fly straight into the Riviera. You still can't: Vlorë International Airport, built specifically to put Sarandë and Ksamil a direct flight from Scandinavia and Germany, still hasn't cleared the certification needed to actually operate, and for the second summer running — 2026 included — Nordic tour operators have had to cancel their planned charter routes there and keep flying everyone into Tirana instead. That means every itinerary still needs the overland leg built in: a multi-hour drive or bus south from the capital, not a beach-town landing. Book your flights into Tirana, not a coastal airport whose opening date keeps slipping.

How many days do I need in Tirana and Berat?

Tirana rewards 1–2 days (it's compact and walkable); Berat is worth 1–2 days for the old town, castle, and a couple of wine-country day trips. Combined, 3–4 days covers both comfortably, usually bookended by a week on the coast.

Is Tirana worth visiting, or just a landing airport?

It's genuinely worth 1–2 days on its own — colorful Italian-designed buildings from the 2000s regeneration project, communist-era bunker museums, a lively café scene, and some of the best-value food in the Balkans. Plenty of travelers plan a half-day layover and end up staying two.

Can I do Tirana and Berat as day trips from each other?

Berat is about a 2–2.5 hour drive or bus from Tirana, doable as a long day trip but much better as an overnight — the old town at dusk, lit by lamplight against the hillside, is the whole point.
