Ksamil
Ksamil, about 20 minutes south of Sarandë, has the Albanian Riviera's clearest, most turquoise water — genuinely comparable to the best of Greece — plus four small, swimmable islands just offshore. The tradeoff for that beauty is popularity: Ksamil gets seriously crowded and noticeably pricier in July–August, when sunbeds sell out early and boat trips to the islands need booking ahead. Late spring and September deliver the same water with a fraction of the people.
Ksamil is the photo that convinced half of Europe the Albanian Riviera was worth a look — genuinely postcard-blue water, small uninhabited islands close enough to swim to, and a shoreline that looks almost too saturated to be real. It's also, by a comfortable margin, the most crowded stretch of this coast in peak summer, so timing your visit matters more here than almost anywhere else in Albania.
The Ksamil Islands
Four small islands sit just offshore, close enough that strong swimmers reach the nearest one unassisted, though a short paddleboat or water-taxi ride is the easier (and far more common) option. The islands themselves are mostly bare rock and scrub, not much to see beyond the beach — the point is the swim and the view back at the coastline, not the islands as a destination.

Best beaches in Ksamil
| Beach | Best for |
|---|---|
| Main Ksamil beaches (central) | Easiest access, most facilities, also the busiest |
| Beaches just north toward Sarandë | A short walk or drive from slightly quieter, less developed coves |
| The islands themselves | A short paddleboat ride for a quieter swim away from the mainland crowds |
Ksamil in July–August is genuinely crowded — sunbeds fill up by mid-morning, restaurant prices climb, and parking near the main beaches can take real patience. If your dates are flexible, late May, June, or September get you the same water with a fraction of the people and noticeably lower prices.
What it costs
| Item | Approx. cost |
|---|---|
| Sunbed and umbrella, per day (peak season) | $8–15 |
| Same, shoulder season | $4–8 |
| Paddleboat/water-taxi to the islands | $4–10 round-trip |
| Guesthouse, per night | $30–60 (higher in August) |
Mistakes worth avoiding
- Visiting in peak August expecting a quiet, undiscovered beach town — that window has closed; go in shoulder season for that experience instead.
- Not booking a room ahead in July–August — Ksamil's accommodation is limited relative to demand and fills up.
- Skipping sunscreen reapplication — there's very little natural shade on most of the beaches here.
