Phu Quoc
Phu Quoc is Vietnam's largest island — a genuine tropical beach destination near Cambodia's coast, less developed than Thailand's islands but growing fast. Long Beach and Sao Beach are the standouts, alongside the night market and the record-breaking Hon Thom cable car. Dry season runs roughly November–March. Phu Quoc is the beach-and-relax stop most Vietnam itineraries are missing — an actual tropical island with clear water and real resorts, sitting closer to Cambodia's coast than to mainland Vietnam. It's less polished than Phuket or Bali, which for many travelers is exactly the appeal.

What's worth doing
- The Hon Thom Cable Car — one of the longest three-rope cable cars in the world, connecting the mainland to Hon Thom ("Pineapple") Island, with an amusement park and beach on arrival.
- Phu Quoc Night Market in Duong Dong town — fresh seafood grilled to order, plus the usual souvenir stalls.
- A boat trip to the An Thoi Islands — snorkeling and swimming stops around a small archipelago south of the main island.
- Phu Quoc National Park — for a jungle hike if you want a break from the beach.
Phu Quoc is also known for producing Vietnam's best fish sauce (nuoc mam) — several traditional producers offer short tours if you're curious how it's made.
The special Phu Quoc visa rule
Unlike the rest of Vietnam, any foreign visitor arriving directly to Phu Quoc by air or sea from outside Vietnam can stay visa-free for up to 30 days, regardless of nationality — including passport holders who'd otherwise need a visa or e-visa for the mainland. When to visit
Dry season runs roughly November through March — the most reliable window for calm seas and sunshine. April–May gets hot before the rains arrive; June–September is the rainy season with a real chance of storms disrupting boat trips, though showers are often short.
