Most standard group tours from Ho Chi Minh City visit Ben Dinh purely for the shorter drive; Ben Duoc is the better pick if you have a private guide and want a less touristy, more expansive visit, plus the adjacent Ben Duoc Memorial Temple honoring local war dead.
What a visit actually involves
- A short documentary film explaining the tunnel network's history and construction, shown at the entrance.
- Guided walking through the forest above the tunnels, with camouflaged entrance holes pointed out (some barely wider than a shoulder).
- Demonstrations of the war-era booby traps used against advancing soldiers — genuinely sobering, not sanitized.
- A widened stretch of tunnel (about 100m, sometimes offered in shorter or longer options) that visitors can crawl through — hot, cramped, and pitch dark in sections.
- A war-era firing range at the end of most tours, an optional paid add-on (see below).
The tunnels are genuinely tight, hot, and dark — even the widened tourist sections require crouching or crawling for stretches, and Vietnam's heat makes it worse. Skip it if you're claustrophobic, and wear closed, comfortable shoes; flip-flops make the crawling sections harder than they need to be.

It's optional, and many visitors find the juxtaposition — a somber war history site with a for-fun shooting range attached — genuinely jarring rather than appealing. Skip it if that tone clash doesn't sit right with you; nothing about the core tour requires it.
Bring cash in small denominations if you do want to try the shooting range — it's a separate, informal payment at the range itself, not part of your tour ticket.
Mistakes worth avoiding
- Wearing sandals or flip-flops — the crawling sections are cramped and uneven; closed shoes make a real difference.
- Booking a combined Cu Chi Tunnels + Mekong Delta 'see both in one day' tour — both deserve unhurried time, and the combined version mostly means sitting on a bus.
- Treating it as just another photo-op stop — it's a genuinely heavy site for many Vietnamese people, and a respectful pace and attitude go a long way.
