The Lake District
England's Lake District rewards 2–3 days around Windermere (lake cruises from £19.20/$25), Ambleside, and Keswick — gentler and more compact than the Scottish Highlands, with genuine literary pull (Wordsworth's Dove Cottage, Beatrix Potter's Hill Top farmhouse, £15.40/$20) alongside serious hiking (Scafell Pike, England's highest peak). About 3 hours from London by train, or 1.5 from Manchester.
The Lake District gets folded into 'Scottish Highlands or Wales' comparison pages a lot, which sells it short — this is a genuinely complete region on its own, with glacial lakes, literary history real enough to visit the actual houses, and hiking that ranges from a gentle lakeside stroll to England's highest, most demanding peak.
How many days in the Lake District?
Two to three days covers Windermere, a Beatrix Potter or Wordsworth site, and either a lake cruise or a moderate hike. Serious hikers aiming for Scafell Pike should budget a full day just for that, plus a rest day either side.
What's actually worth doing
- A Windermere lake cruise — England's largest lake, with several cruise routes; the shorter Red or Yellow Cruise runs about an hour, the full-loop Freedom of the Lake ticket lets you hop on and off all day.
- Scafell Pike — England's highest peak (978m/3,209ft); a full-day round-trip hike (6–8 hours) for reasonably fit hikers with proper boots, not a casual walk.
- Hill Top — Beatrix Potter's actual 17th-century farmhouse near Near Sawrey, preserved largely as she left it; advance booking is required even for National Trust members.
- Dove Cottage & the Wordsworth Museum, Grasmere — where William Wordsworth lived and wrote some of his best-known poetry; tickets function as an annual pass, so a return visit within the year is free.
- Keswick and Derwentwater — a quieter, less crowded base than Windermere, with its own lake cruise and easy access to Catbells, a popular, gentler fell walk.
What it costs
| Item | Approx. cost |
|---|---|
| Windermere lake cruise (Red/Yellow, return) | $25–26 adult (£19.20–20.20) |
| Windermere lake cruise (Freedom of the Lake, all-day) | $45 adult (£35) |
| Hill Top (Beatrix Potter's farmhouse) | $20 adult / $10 child (£15.40 / £7.70) |
| Guesthouse/B&B, per night | $85–150 (£68–120) |
Book Hill Top online well ahead — even National Trust members need a timed ticket, and it sells out on nice-weather weekends. A rental car makes the region far easier to explore beyond Windermere's main strip, but Windermere, Ambleside, and Keswick are all connected by local bus if you'd rather not drive.
Getting there
About 3 hours from London by train to Windermere (via a change, usually at Oxenholme), or roughly 1.5 hours from Manchester — making the Lake District a realistic add-on to a Liverpool/Manchester leg as well as a standalone trip. The nearest airports are Manchester and Newcastle.
Hiking Scafell Pike — what to know
Scafell Pike is a genuine mountain hike, not a stroll — allow 6–8 hours round trip, wear proper waterproof hiking boots, bring layers regardless of the forecast (weather changes fast at altitude here), and check conditions before you set out. Mist can roll in quickly and navigation gets genuinely harder above the treeline; if you're not an experienced hiker, a guided group ascent is a safer choice than going solo.
Mistakes worth avoiding
- Underestimating Scafell Pike because it's 'only' 978m — British mountain weather turns fast, and the terrain above the treeline is exposed and easy to misjudge.
- Basing yourself only in Windermere — it's the most crowded town in the region; Keswick or Ambleside give a quieter, equally scenic alternative base.
- Not booking Hill Top ahead, then being turned away — timed tickets are required for everyone, members included.
Windermere, Ambleside, or Keswick all make good bases
