Okinawa
Okinawa is Japan's subtropical outlier — turquoise beaches, coral reefs, and a distinct Ryukyuan culture and cuisine mainland Japan doesn't share. Naha, the main hub, is about 2.5 hours by flight from Tokyo. Give it 4-5 days minimum to cover Naha, the Churaumi Aquarium up north, and at least one real beach day; avoid the peak typhoon window (August-September) if your schedule has any flexibility.
Okinawa doesn't feel like mainland Japan, and locals will tell you as much — the Ryukyu Kingdom was its own independent nation until 1879, and the food, architecture, and pace of life here still carry that distinct history. It's the closest thing Japan has to a tropical-beach vacation, and a genuinely different trip from a Tokyo-Kyoto-Osaka itinerary, not an extension of it.
How many days do you need?
Four to five days is a reasonable minimum: a day or two around Naha (Shuri Castle, the Kokusai Dori shopping street), a day trip north to the Churaumi Aquarium and Ocean Expo Park, and at least one or two full beach days, ideally on one of the outer islands (Kerama or Miyako) if you have the time to get there.
Naha and Shuri Castle
Shuri Castle, the former royal palace of the Ryukyu Kingdom, burned down in a 2019 fire and has been under active reconstruction since — the Main Hall's exterior lacquering was completed in late 2025, with a full public reopening targeted for late November 2026. Even mid-reconstruction, the surrounding park, gates, and stone walls remain fully open and worth visiting; check the current status before you go if seeing the finished Main Hall specifically matters to your trip.

Churaumi Aquarium
One of the world's largest aquariums, home to a massive tank with whale sharks and manta rays, inside Ocean Expo Park at the northern end of the main island — about 2 hours from Naha by bus, or 1.5 hours driving via the Okinawa Expressway. Open 8:30am-6:30pm (last entry 5:30pm); it's also a genuinely good backup plan for a rainy or typhoon-affected day, given how far north it sits.
Beaches worth the trip
- Kerama Islands — a short ferry from Naha (30-50 minutes), with some of the clearest water in Japan; genuinely worth a day trip or overnight if diving or snorkeling is a priority.
- Emerald Beach — inside Ocean Expo Park near Churaumi, an easy, family-friendly stop to pair with the aquarium.
- Miyako and Ishigaki Islands — further-flung outer islands (their own separate flights from Naha or mainland Japan), for travelers with extra time who want a quieter, even more tropical version of Okinawa.
Typhoon season — plan around it if you can
Okinawa's typhoon season runs roughly June through October, peaking in August and September — flights and ferries can be disrupted with little notice during a direct hit. October is the genuine sweet spot: typhoon risk drops sharply while Naha still holds some of its clearest, sunniest weather of the year. If you're traveling August-September, build a flexible itinerary and travel insurance into the plan.

Best time to visit
March-June and October-November are the sweet spots — warm, mostly clear, and outside peak typhoon risk. Summer (July-September) has the warmest water for swimming and diving but the highest typhoon exposure; winter is mild by mainland standards but too cool for most people's idea of a beach trip.
