Gili Islands
The Gili Islands are three tiny, car-free islands off Lombok's coast, each with its own personality: Trawangan (Gili T) for nightlife and diving, Gili Air for a calmer in-between option, Gili Meno for genuine honeymoon-quiet. A fast boat from Bali (Padangbai or Sanur) takes roughly 2-2.5 hours. No cars or scooters are allowed anywhere — only bicycles and horse-drawn cidomo carts.
The Gilis are proof that Bali's crowds aren't inevitable — just a short boat ride away, three tiny islands run on bicycles and horse carts instead of scooter traffic, and the water is noticeably clearer than most of Bali's own coastline.
Which Gili is right for you?
| Island | Vibe | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Gili Trawangan (Gili T) | Lively, the most developed of the three | Backpackers, nightlife, dive schools |
| Gili Air | A calmer middle ground | Digital nomads, couples wanting some nightlife without the full party scene |
| Gili Meno | Quiet, the least developed | Honeymooners, anyone wanting to genuinely do nothing |

Getting there from Bali
Fast boats run from Padangbai or Sanur, taking roughly 2-2.5 hours depending on the operator and conditions, for about $25-40 one-way. An alternative route flies into Lombok's airport and connects by a shorter boat transfer — worth it if flight timing works out better than the direct fast boat.
Seas can get rough, especially outside the dry season (roughly April-October) — book with a reputable operator (not the cheapest option available) and expect occasional delays or cancellations rather than treating the crossing as a sure thing.
No cars, no scooters — genuinely
All three Gilis ban motor vehicles entirely. Getting around means walking, renting a bicycle (roughly $3-6/day), or hailing a cidomo — a traditional horse-drawn cart still used as everyday local transport, not just a tourist novelty.
Diving and snorkeling
All three islands have accessible house-reef snorkeling, and sea turtles are a near-guaranteed sighting close to shore. Gili Trawangan has the biggest concentration of dive schools; a PADI Open Water course typically runs $300-380, broadly similar to Southeast Asia's other big dive hubs.

Day trip to Lombok
Lombok, the larger island the Gilis sit off, is an easy add-on for waterfalls, surf beaches, and Mount Rinjani views if you want a change of pace — regular boats connect Gili Trawangan and Gili Air to Lombok's Bangsal harbor in about 15-20 minutes.
What it costs
| Item | Approx. cost |
|---|---|
| Fast boat from Bali, one-way | $25-40 |

| Guesthouse, per night | $20-50 |
| PADI Open Water course | $300-380 |
Mistakes worth avoiding
- Booking Gili Trawangan expecting Gili Meno's quiet, or vice versa — check which island actually matches the trip you want.
- Skimping on the boat operator to save a few dollars — conditions between Bali and the Gilis can get genuinely choppy.
- Forgetting cash — ATMs exist but are limited and occasionally run dry, especially on Gili Meno.
