The Perfect 7-Day Czech Republic Itinerary

One week is the genuine sweet spot: 3 nights based in Prague (Castle, Old Town, Jewish Quarter), a day trip to Kutná Hora's Bone Church, 2 nights in Český Krumlov, then a flexible final day. Ground costs (no flights) run roughly $875 per person mid-range for the week, per our trip cost calculator — add $450–950 round-trip for flights from a major hub.

A week is genuinely enough to do the Czech Republic properly without rushing — long enough for Prague to breathe, and long enough to add the country's two best side trips without turning any of it into a blur. Here's the exact split that works, plus what to swap if your dates or energy levels don't match it perfectly.

The 7-day breakdown

DayWhereWhat you're doing
1Arrive in PragueSettle into Old Town, Malá Strana, or Vinohrady; a sunset walk to Charles Bridge before dinner at a real beer hall.
2Prague Castle & Jewish QuarterSt. Vitus Cathedral and the Old Royal Palace in the morning, Josefov's synagogues and the Old Jewish Cemetery in the afternoon.
3Old Town at sunrise, then a slower paceCharles Bridge and the Astronomical Clock before the tour groups arrive, then an unhurried afternoon around Vinohrady or Žižkov.
4Day trip to Kutná HoraThe Sedlec Ossuary (book your timed slot before you go) and St. Barbara's Cathedral — back in Prague by dinner.
5Travel to Český KrumlovDirect bus from Prague (2.5–3 hours), check in, and walk the old town's river loop as the day-trippers start clearing out.
6Český Krumlov castle & townClimb the castle's painted tower, then enjoy the old town at its quietest once the tour buses have left for the day.
7Flexible final day + departureEither a relaxed last morning back in Prague, or — if you extend to 8 days — a Karlovy Vary or Brno add-on instead.

Days 1–3 and 5–6 are the non-negotiable core of this itinerary. Day 4 (Kutná Hora) and day 7 are the two flexible slots — if you're short on time, cut Kutná Hora first (it's the most skippable, not the least interesting) rather than shortchanging Český Krumlov, which genuinely needs the overnight to be worth the trip out.

Why this order (and what to swap)

Kutná Hora sits east of Prague and Český Krumlov sits south, so doing Kutná Hora as a same-day round trip before heading to Krumlov keeps you from backtracking. Trying to also fit Karlovy Vary (west) or Brno (further east than Kutná Hora) into the same seven days is the mistake almost every rushed itinerary makes — both are genuinely worth an extra day or two, but only if you're building an 8–10 day trip, not squeezing them into day 7 on a tight schedule.

Budget for the week

CategoryApprox. cost (2 people, mid-range, 7 days)
Accommodation$490–770 (roughly $35–55/night per person)
Food & drink$420–560
Attractions & transport (incl. Kutná Hora + Krumlov travel)$180–260
Total ground cost (excl. flights)~$1,750 for two, per our trip cost calculator

Common mistakes with a 7-day pace

  • Trying to add Vienna or Budapest into the same seven days — both are genuinely worth 3–4 hours by direct train, but that turns this into a rushed multi-country dash rather than a proper Czech Republic trip. Save them for a longer Central Europe itinerary.
  • Doing Kutná Hora and Český Krumlov back to back without a day in between — you'll end up exhausted from two consecutive travel days. The order above builds in a full Prague day (day 3) as a buffer before Kutná Hora.
  • Booking Sedlec Ossuary's timed entry for the same afternoon you plan to travel onward — leave a real gap; the mid-morning tour coaches back up entry times, and you don't want your Kutná Hora slot to bleed into your Prague-to-Krumlov departure.

If you only have 4–5 days

Cut to Prague (3 nights) plus Český Krumlov (1 night) and skip Kutná Hora entirely — it's the easiest cut to make and the one most returning visitors add back in on a second trip. See our full 4-day Prague guide for how to make that shorter version work without feeling rushed.

Questions people actually ask

Is 7 days enough for the Czech Republic?
Yes — it's the genuine sweet spot: enough time for Prague's full highlight list plus both Kutná Hora and Český Krumlov, without rushing any of the three. Much less than a week and Kutná Hora is usually the first thing to cut.
What's the ideal Czech Republic itinerary for one week?
3 nights in Prague, a day trip to Kutná Hora, 2 nights in Český Krumlov, and a flexible final day — either a relaxed Prague morning or, on an 8-day version, a Karlovy Vary or Brno add-on.
Should I visit Kutná Hora or Karlovy Vary on a 7-day trip?
Kutná Hora fits more naturally into 7 days since it's a quick, low-effort detour on the way to Český Krumlov's general direction of travel planning. Karlovy Vary is west of Prague and genuinely deserves its own day — save it for an 8–10 day trip instead of squeezing it into day 7.
Can I fit Vienna or Budapest into a 7-day Czech Republic trip?
Not without turning it into a rushed multi-country dash. Both are a genuine 3–4.5 hours away by direct train and worth 2–3 days each — better treated as an extension of a longer, 10–14-day Central Europe itinerary than squeezed into a Czech-focused week.
How much does a 7-day Czech Republic trip cost?
Roughly $1,750 for two people mid-range (accommodation, food, attractions, and internal transport), excluding flights — see our trip cost calculator for a number matched to your exact travel style and group size.
