The Seven Rila Lakes

What are the Seven Rila Lakes?
Seven distinct glacial lakes, each with its own Bulgarian name describing its shape or character — the Tear (the highest and clearest), the Eye, the Kidney, the Twin, the Trefoil, the Fish Lake, and the Lower Lake. They sit in a high alpine bowl in Rila National Park, part of the same mountain range as Rila Monastery, though the lakes themselves are roughly 1.5–2 hours' drive from the monastery, not a quick add-on to it.

The lift closes for routine maintenance on the last Monday of every month, plus two longer shutdowns — roughly two weeks in spring (mid-April to early May) and two weeks in autumn (around October) — and its hours shift by season (winter runs are typically 9am–4:30pm, later on Mondays). Check the current schedule before you drive out; showing up on a closed day means either skipping the lift entirely or hiking the full two-hour climb instead.
The hike itself
- From the upper chairlift station to the lakes — a relatively easy walk, mostly clear paths, reaching the lower lakes within 20–30 minutes of stepping off the lift.
- The full loop past all seven lakes — 3–5 hours round trip, with some steeper, rockier stretches between the higher lakes; no technical climbing, but sturdy hiking shoes and reasonable fitness matter.

Getting there
It's about a 2-hour drive from Sofia to the Panichishte chairlift base. There's no direct bus, so travelers without a car generally take a bus toward Dupnitsa or Sapareva Banya and arrange a taxi for the final stretch, or simply book an organized day tour from Sofia — the easiest carless option by far, and common enough that several operators run it daily in season.
Arrive at the lower chairlift station as early as you can manage, especially on a weekend — queues for the lift can get genuinely long by late morning in peak summer, and an early start also means better light for photos and a cooler climb if you're doing the full loop.
Best time to go
Mid-June through September is the safest, most reliable window — snow can linger on the higher trail sections into early summer, and the lift's own maintenance closures bracket both ends of the season. Early autumn (September) often brings the clearest skies and thinner crowds than peak July–August.
Combining it with Rila Monastery
Despite both being in the Rila mountains, the lakes and the monastery are roughly 1.5–2 hours apart by road, not a shared trailhead — trying to do both properly in one day means a very long, rushed loop. Most visitors either pick one per day trip from Sofia, or stay a night in the region (Panichishte or Sapareva Banya, both near the lift) to do the lakes one day and the monastery the next at a relaxed pace.
